Fill-out your requests

The LCD of my T41 laptop cracked last Sunday. An accident, I swear. Why will I crack the screen? I'm not that stupid.

I went to the IT Migration room to have an LCD replacement. They don't have any spare LCDs and the service unit that I'm requesting is pending until my boss acknowledge the purchase of the new LCD screen. So the whole day, I was in the interns cube working.

Then i receive an email from my boss regarding Internet usage and working at home.

Employee is to secure approval for overtime BEFORE hours are worked.
If an employee is not able to take required training for their job during regular work hours, the employee must get approval BEFORE taking training after hours. This should not be the norm.

So let me get this straight. Before I work at home, i have to call my boss and tell him, "Hey I need to check a file, i think there's something wrong with it." So even if it will just take me 20mins, i still have to tell him. Uhmmm...

I work at home, period. I don't file it as an overtime. I have to connect in internet to get the files that the US folks and Costa Ricans need to send me. I can go on and on about the reasons why i have to work at home in the evening, connect in the internet, etc. I don't want to sound so dramatic, but hey, when i think that i have to finish something before I go to work in the morning, then I'll do it.

Tonight, I logged on our server using my own internet connection. Checked some emails and i was done working tonight. If this is what he wants, then he'll get it. NO MORE WORKING AFTER 4PM. I will not work at home anymore, even on weekends. I'll follow the guidelines.

Maybe I'll send him my guidelines:
DJ will shutdown his laptop by 4pm. Last minute requests after 4pm will be entertained the next day.

So the next time someone asks me to analyze something in which is critical and should be done at home, I'll ask them to fill-out a request and send it to my boss. Unless my boss approves it, then I'll work on it.
